old highway 80
i have to do a presentation on something famous in san diego for my history class so i picked old highway 80. i've seen the signs around my house for it and found some websites about it's location. so i decided to drive it and take some pictures. i really only wound up taking pictures of old highway 80 historic route signs but it was still fun.
we started at park/broadway. where it supposedly ended in the 50's. (it was planned to be extended down to rosecrans, but i guess that never happened.) took park to el cajon blvd... took that to la mesa blvd, to the 8 east. 8 east to main st. main st forever... then at lake jennings it turns into old highway 80. took that till it stopped for awhile by viejas and took willows rd till it ended at the freeway. got on 8 east for a little bit and got off at the 79. (forget the actual street name.) went north on it till the old highway 80 branched off again and followed that for some time till arriving at the golden acorn casino. lost $50 and called it a day. i had a great time.
when we got off the freeway at the 79. i read about a part of the old freeway that was closed after the fires in 2003. so we drove as far as we could and then walked down it for a bit. it was creepy because it's in the middle of no where. and ana kept telling me how easy it would of been for us to kill someone and bury them there. and there was already a car parked when we got there.. but we never saw anyone along our trek. i got a few pictures there. i'll post the pictures later. the one i liked the best was a stamp in the concrete from the company that layed it in 1931.
