BULLSHIT
We had a local municipal election yesterday. The office of mayor, city clerk, and three trustee seats were up for grabs. The guys who've been running the town for the past four years (the Caucus Party) have been doing a great job. The fuckwits in power before them (the Action Party) were notorious for back room, closed door dealings, and awarding contracts for "campaign donations" even if they weren't the lowest bidders. A classic Illinois politician move.
Desperate to get back in power, the action party has been running a smear campaign for the past two months. They refused to openly debate the caucus team, and somehow persuaded the local paper to endorse them in spite of all the accomplishments of the last mayor. The article literally said that they liked Mayor Krier, and how he handled the city's budget in the face of an economic disaster, but they were backing stackman because he seemed like a nice guy. WTC?!
Anyway... the action party narrowly beat out the caucus party. But here is the part of this whole story that I love: I live in a town with a population of approximately 20,000 people. Want to know how many of them voted?
3600
Local elections are THE most important election you can vote in. These are the people responsible for fixing your streets, your sewers, bringing business into town, making it a nice place to live, running your schools, educating your children. This is the stuff that literally hits home. And nobody ever votes in these fucking elections. This is how the action party won. They riled up enough of a base to get a win using lies. They had as many people as they could get write in to the local paper to get letters published. The beauty about letters to the editor? They don't have to be true. It's technically not the opinion of the paper... even though the paper was clearly in their pockey.
Truth be told, most people in my town liked Mayor Krier. But they were too complacent and happy with the status quo to realize that this guy needed to be reelected to keep doing the job he was doing. Whatever... their loss. Mayor Stackman will either lower or not raise property taxes while he is in office, creating a massive deficit forcing us to issue yet another bond just to cover our bills due to the mismanagement of the action party.
I'm really starting to fucking hate the democratic process. Voting needs to be mandatory. You should have to pay a tax to not vote. With things the way they are now, all we have are very polarized people voting against each other. It doesn't reflect the will of the majority at all.
