I was waiting for my ceviche at the taco truck and the lady asks these two hipster white kids, "How can I help you?" in perfect English. The girl orders in Spanish, which, is terrible and rolls her Rs like there's no tomorrow. Maybe I'm being a little oversensitive but i found it a tad insulting.

Oh I see. Did she have an attitude to go along with it?
I have a lot of white friends who are pretty decent in spanish, sometimes it doesn't sound all that great. Most times they speak it to someone who appears to speak spanish because they want to practice it, while appreciating the fact that they sound like gringos. They just roll with it and think its funny. :P

Oh. Then she's a loser. Don't feel insulted.
The only Spanish I know is "placas."
I communicate with my housekeepers in broken Latin and English.

Yes! |
That's what I figured. I just wanted to make sure.
True story. I worked with a guy who did freelance illustrating on the side. There was one author he worked with a few times, who wrote books that taught spanish for english speaking supervisors in the service industry. The first one was food industry, and the second one was landscaping. He drew the pictures.
I don't know why, but I always thought it was a condescending idea... good idea, but eh... didn't rub me the right way. If you're that willing to exploit undocumented immigrant labor, at least learn more than how to say "go pick up that rake, Jaun" in spanish.

thought process:
"'Placas'? Like, license plates? Does she meant 'platos"...like..plates? Should I correct her? I'll just wait for someone else to ask."

We have a book somewhere at the motel that's just handy phrases for communicating with Spanish-speaking staff. It's in English, Spanish, and Gujrati.
